ABOUT EBENEZER COLLEGE VIRTUAL SMART SCHOOL

INTRODUCTION

Ebenezer College Virtual Smart School (ECVSS) is a secondary school that provides a virtual distributed learning option to high school students. The school was organized to facilitate the individual educational needs of persons who for various reasons are unable to attend the traditional educational environment. It was also established out of the need to provide educational options to individuals who are desirous of a flexible, highly supportive and non – traditional learning environment.

PURPOSE

ECVSS, was established to address secondary education and training needs. Through technology-based solutions ECVSS also facilitates the delivery of online course offerings of other learning institutions; provides special education training for individuals with learning disabilities; and for adults who are desirous of obtaining a general education certificate. One of the school’s primary focus is the mastery of content and skills necessary to meet national and international examinations standards.

Discovering Your Genius Achieving Your Maximum Potential

Albert Einstein, a noted theoretical physicist stated that “every child is born a genius”. As suggested in the book of Matthew Chapter 25 , individuals may have more than one innate area of ‘smart’, given as their measure to be developed, refined and Served to the world. Jesus, the great master teacher, proposes this idea in the form of a parable referring to these traits as talents. Many 21st. Century modern day teachers and others like Dr. Myles Munroe, Rosabeth Moss Kanter, John C. Maxwell, Stephen R. Covey, Steven Levitt, Bill Gates, and Mary Jo Asmus, discusses these traits in their writings within the context of purpose, potential and leadership development. In the book of Proverbs Chapter 22.6 we are admonished to “train up a child in the way he should go”. This teaching became a standard bearer in the home of Minister Obed Ebenezer Gardiner Sr. for child rearing; and he ascribed to these principles. It is from this Biblical mandate, the teachings of Jesus, and being inspired by the writings and the lives of wise and Holy men who were inspired by the Holy Spirit, that the name Ebenezer College Virtual Smart School emerged; one our primary responsibilities being to help learners discover their leadership purpose, and to cultivate and nurture these gifts and talents.

CYBER LEARNING ENVIRONMENT

 ECVSS utilizes best methodological practices to ensure the creation of interactive student centered and empowering online learning environments. At EVCSS the online learning environment is structured to be both cooperative and collaborative. The selected methodologies are highly dependent upon the stated educational goals and the needs of the online community. In this learning environment all team participants are held accountable for their individual contributions, participation and learning while teaching and learning from each other. David W. Johnson and Rodger T. Johnson, 2009, stated that “the purpose of cooperative learning teams is to make each member a stronger individual in his or her own right”. This method is extensively used in teacher education to facilitate the mastery of foundational knowledge and skills.

Technological Resources, Infrastructure and Support

MOODLE Inc., is known to be one of the leading providers of e-Education solutions worldwide and has gained credibility at the grade school, tertiary, corporate and government agency levels. ECVSS utilizes this platform, allowing for the facilitation of ECVSS comprehensive online education needs.

Clients of ECVSS participate in online course offerings having access to asynchronous and synchronous modes of communication to include discussion boards, drop box, virtual chat, email facility, virtual tutorial and classroom instruction, on-line resource search center and a virtual library network. Additional educational resources include textbooks, educational videos and demonstration CD’s. Clients are able to register online, receive course grades, and transcripts. Payments are made using a walk-in bank facility using credit cards, certified checks or cash.

SUBJECT MATTER EXPERT (SME) FACILITATORS

One of the challenges of on-line learning is to ensure that students receive the highest level of support and that the quality of instruction is on par with face-to-face modalities. ECVSS is in professional partnership with SME Facilitators/smart teachers, who are all certified to teach, holding credentials from accredited institutions of higher learning. 

Course facilitators at ECVSS:

  1. Ensure that students have structured access to and interaction with smart teachers by means of on-line office hours and video conferencing.
  2. Are fully trained in distance education delivery modalities and curriculum development.
  3. Utilize instructional methods and delivery systems that provide students with the opportunity to achieve the stated objectives of courses and programmes.
  4. Inform students of the goals and requirements of each course, the nature of the course content, and the methods of evaluation to be employed.
  5. Use a variety of means to evaluate students performance including practical and written examinations, projects, research studies and papers, cooperative group  assignments  and presentations.

SME Facilitators/Smart Teachers partnership selection:

  1. Appropriate academic preparation and are proficient in oral and written communication in the language in which assigned courses are to be taught.
  2. Research activities relevant to their specialized teaching area are required.
  3. ECVSS employs individuals who are directly responsible for the design, delivery and course management.
  4. Proven record of teaching success

ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

Individuals seeking entrance into ECVSS should have completed grade eight having met the requirements for commencing grade nine.
